Our history
Simtronics heritage goes back to 1948, when Simonsen Radio was established. The Company was a pioneer in radio communication and hydro acoustic equipment for the Norwegian fishery fleet.
In 1969, the Company was assigned by the Norwegian military defence to develop electro-optical products for military use, including the use of advanced laser technology.
In 1980, the company, now called SIMRAD, decided to demerge its electro-optical business, which continued operations under the name Simrad Optronics.
Following a period where Kværner held 80 % of the company, Simrad Optronics was sold to Technor in 1999. Simrad Optronics was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 2005 and Technor gradually reduced all their holdings in the company.
From 2002, Fire & Gas activities were one of Simrad Optronics' two business areas, the other was Defence & Security. The Fire & Gas division had developed its first products for the detection of combustible gases in 1984. Until 2000 the main focus was on the North Sea oil and gas industry.
In 2003, the company established a branch in Dubai in order to gain access to the oil and gas industry in the Middle East. In 2004, the French manufacturer Icare was acquired in order to further strengthen the product base and gain access to complementary markets.
In January 2007, Simtronics was demerged from Simrad Optronics and listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange.
